Clinical interpretation

What the total points mean

The score describes cervical readiness. The indication, not the score alone, determines whether to induce or continue observation.

ScoreInterpretationNext actions
0 - 5
Unfavourable cervix

Low cervical readiness; induction is less likely to progress without preparation.

Ripen if induction is indicated

Confirm the indication and contraindications. Use a facility-approved mechanical or pharmacological cervical-ripening method. Do not delay medically indicated delivery solely because the score is low.

6 - 13
Favourable cervix

The cervix is more likely to respond successfully when induction is clinically indicated.

Induce when clinically indicated

Cervical ripening is usually unnecessary. Amniotomy with oxytocin may be appropriate when the head is stable, vaginal birth is suitable, consent is obtained and local protocol supports it.
